Product Description
According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, more than five million women of color hold managerial and professional positions in the workforce. Yet, relatively few of them have reached the top-tier positions of corporate America. Double Outsiders is the first book of its kind to help women of color overcome the barriers they may face along their career path.

This insightful book empowers African American, Latina, Asian, South Asian, Middle Eastern, Native American, and multiracial women to clarify the challenges they face and debunk myths and fallacies about them in corporate environments. It analyzes the critical success factors of professional women of color, provides resources, and offers potential insight into one of the fastest-growing employee demographics. This book also helps companies learn essential strategies for recruitment and retention of women of color.

Ideal for any minority woman who is eager to advance her career, as well as professionals hoping to achieve diversity objectives, Double Outsiders lends readers valuable insights on everything from bypassing career derailers to understanding corporate cultures, to developing relationships with mentors and handling the "fast track." Additionally, the book illuminates the experiences of minority women who have excelled in the corporate world and how they've juggled challenges in the workplace and at home.

5 out of 5 stars Business reading with personality and depth   November 6, 2007

Double Outsiders is more than simply a look at women of color in business. Instead, it's a series of true stories - each with their own unique voice - synthesized with vital statistics to add perspective to the situation. These elements come together to paint a picture of the realities of these women in today's workplace. Ms. Carter's account of the personal stories and triumphs of the women featured is invaluable to anyone...whatever stage of professional development they are in.

Jessica Faye Carter is a seasoned and experienced professional in the fields of corporate law and the financial services industry whose experience and expertise form the basis of a superbly written, organized and presented instruction manual designed specifically for women of color who are trying to enter and/or succeed in the corporate world. An invaluable compendium of practical, applicable information, "Double Outsiders: How Women Of Color Can Succeed In Corporate America" identifies and explains the rules of the corporate game and what must be done to advance a career; how to benefit from interviews, insights and strategies as offered by top female minority executives and others who have overcome bias and prejudice in the course of their own careers; how to find and work with a mentor, as well as developing an effective personal network for career advancement and success. "Double Outsiders" is a strongly recommended acquisition for community and academic library Jobs & Careers reference collections, and a 'must read' for any woman of color or minority ethnic group seeking to advance themselves within the corporate business world.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, practical guide for navigating corporate politics   November 6, 2007

Double Outsiders is a very practical, sober guide for ambitious women who want better insight and guidance as to how to navigate a workplace culture that does not always have their best interest at heart. Ms. Carter calls a spade, a spade, and provides suggestions as to what to do with a spade. As a physician, I haven't worked in a "corporate" environemnt in the traditional sense. It seems to me, however, that this book would be helpful to women in other environments such as academia. It has a very optimistic tone.

Women of color --African-American, Latina, Asian-American, Native American, and others, make up 15 percent of the United States' population, but fill only 1.7 percent of all corporate officer roles in Fortune 500 companies. According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, more than five million women of color hold managerial and professional positions in the workforce, yet, relatively few of them have reached top-tier positions. DOUBLE OUTSIDERS is dedicated to helping these women climb over the barriers that block their career path.

DOUBLE OUTSIDERS empowers women to ignore the myths and fallacies about themselves, clarify the challenges they face, and analyze the critical success factors in corporate environments. If you are a 'minority' woman and want to align your career parallel with male counterparts then this book is a very good starting point. It explores a gamut of issues, which are prevalent in corporate America; from dealing with stereotypes, hypervisibility, and cultural adjustments, to handling life on the 'fast track'.

Women in corporate America are one of the fastest-growing employee demographics in the U.S., and DOUBLE OUTSIDERS provides resources, and offers potential insight to help women learn essential strategies for recruitment and retention. To balance the book, Ms. Carter shares interviews from top female minority executives on the best techniques. She also highlights experiences of several minority women who have excelled in this male-dominated corporate world, while juggling a successful family life. This book employs a wealth of knowledge.
